Couples Travel
A Motobu-coast resort, sunset at Cape Manzamō, and island-hopping the Keramas for the bluest water in Japan.
On Your Own
Solo Travel
Rent a car and trace the island: Shuri Castle's Ryukyu history, Kokusai-dōri izakayas, and English-friendly dive boats to the Blue Cave.
Food
What to Eat
- Okinawa soba. Thick wheat noodles in pork broth with soki (stewed ribs) — nothing like mainland soba.
- Gōyā champurū. Bitter-melon stir-fry with tofu, egg, and spam — the longevity-diet classic.
- Rafute. Pork belly braised glossy in awamori and brown sugar.
- Awamori. Okinawa's indigenous rice liquor — aged kūsu drinks like fine rum.
Transportation
Getting Around
A car is essential outside Naha — the monorail covers Naha only. Ferries reach the Kerama Islands in 35–50 minutes.
Drive on the left; allow ~2 hours Naha→Churaumi. Book the aquarium for late afternoon when tour buses leave.
Where to Base Yourself
Neighborhoods
- Naha / Kokusai-dōri. The capital's eat-drink-shop mile plus Makishi market's fish counters.
- Motobu Peninsula. Aquarium, Emerald Beach, and the island's best resort strip.
- Onna Coast. Mid-island resort row — Blue Cave diving, Cape Manzamō.
- Kerama Islands. Day-trip archipelago — Zamami's absurdly clear water.
What to Know
Safety
Extremely safe. Respect typhoon advisories; coral cuts end more trips than anything else — wear reef shoes.
