Backpacker-friendly to mid-range friendly. The main-island resort strip is affordable; outer-island private resorts (Yasawas, Mamanuca) push $500-1000/night.
With Kids
Family Travel
Denarau Island resorts have kids' clubs, calm swim beaches, and family-friendly restaurants. South Sea Cruises + Captain Cook Cruises run day boats to sand cays.
Together
Couples Travel
Skip Nadi town — head straight to a Yasawa or Mamanuca island resort for the honeymoon shot. Overwater bures at Likuliku are Fiji's answer to Bora Bora at half the price.
On Your Own
Solo Travel
The Yasawa Flyer catamaran links backpacker resorts along the Yasawa chain — a well-worn solo route with a strong social scene.
Food
What to Eat
- Kokoda. Fiji's ceviche — raw white fish cured in lime, coconut cream, and chili.
- Lovo. A traditional underground earth oven feast — root vegetables, chicken, and fish wrapped in banana leaves.
- Fiji Bitter. Not food — but the local beer that pairs with every sunset. Try Vonu lager too.
Transportation
Getting Around
Nadi International Airport is Fiji's hub — flights connect to Sydney, LA, Auckland. Denarau Island (10 min taxi from the airport) is the main resort strip.
Ferries from Port Denarau to the Yasawas and Mamanucas leave morning + midday; book at south-seacruises.com.fj at least a day ahead.
Where to Base Yourself
Neighborhoods
- Nadi town. Local shops, the Sri Siva Subramaniya Temple, honest curries — not a beach base.
- Denarau. The resort strip — Hilton, Sheraton, Sofitel — walkable Port Denarau for restaurants.
- Mamanuca islands. Closer resort islands — 30-90 min ferry — mix of upscale + backpacker.
- Yasawa islands. Farther-out chain — 2-4 hour ferry — the classic South Pacific island experience.
What to Know
Safety
Very safe — Fijians are famously welcoming. The main hazards are sun, waves, and the occasional cyclone in December-April.
