When to Go
Best Time to Visit
May–October. Dry season with clear water for snorkeling and less humidity. November–April is warmer, rainier, and cheaper — sunset views still spectacular.

Mid-range
$700/day
Luxury
$2500/day
Not a budget destination. Overwater bungalows start ~$800/night; luxury resorts (Four Seasons, St. Regis) top $3000. Pensions on the main island are $200-350/night.
With Kids
Family Travel
Kid-friendly resorts (InterContinental Thalasso, Four Seasons) run kids clubs and free reef snorkeling. Rays and reef sharks at the lagoon sanctuary are a highlight — safe for children.
Together
Couples Travel
The universal honeymoon. Book a bungalow with a glass floor + private plunge pool, and pre-order a floating breakfast at least one morning.
On Your Own
Solo Travel
Uncommon for solo travel — but pensions on the main island (rather than resort motus) give you access to hikes, a scooter, and a normal restaurant scene.
Food
What to Eat
- Poisson cru. Raw tuna cured in lime and coconut milk — French Polynesia's signature dish; every restaurant does it.
- Mahi-mahi (Coriphene). Grilled or curried — pulled from the lagoon that morning.
- Chevrettes de rivière. Freshwater river prawns from Tahiti's valleys — grilled with garlic.
Transportation
Getting Around
Fly Air Tahiti from Papeete (Tahiti) — 50 minutes. From the Bora Bora airport (Motu Mute island), your resort will send a boat.
Rent a bike or scooter on the main island — the 32km ring road is flat and scenic. Motu (island resort) guests need a boat to reach the main island.
Where to Base Yourself
Neighborhoods
- Vaitape. Main-island town with the ferry pier, banks, markets, restaurants.
- Matira Beach. The one public swimmable beach on the main island — white sand, calm shallow water.
- Motu Toopua / Motu Piti Aau. The two islet chains ringing the lagoon — where the top resorts sit.
What to Know
Safety
Extremely safe. Main risks are ocean-related — currents inside the lagoon are gentle, but leaving the reef line is dangerous.
